Deputy Injured in Henderson County Crash

Last week, a Henderson County deputy was injured in a two-car crash. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened near the intersection of Howard Gap Road and Clear Creek Road. Very few details about this wreck have been released, but we do know that the deputy's patrol car was rear-ended. The deputy was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Thankfully, that person's injuries were not described as life threatening.

Car Crashes into Swannanoa Transformer

On Thursday afternoon, a car crashed into a transformer in Swannanoa. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened on Sylvester Way. Very few details have been released about this one-car crash, but we do know that the vehicle slammed into the transformer and bent the metal power box. Thankfully, no injuries were reported on the scene.

Injury Crash in Mills River

Last week, there was an injury crash in Mills River. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Wednesday morning near the intersection of Turnpike Road and Brannon Road. This single-vehicle crash sent a car off of the roadway and into a nearby patch of trees. Initial reports indicate that speed may have been a factor in this crash.

Road Debris Danger in North Carolina

WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently looked into the danger of debris and loose cargo on North Carolina roadways. Just about everybody has a story from a time when they had to avoid debris in the roadway. Failing to properly secure and fasten all cargo in one's truck bed, car or trailer can put following motorists at risk for injury causing and potentially fatal crashes. These preventable roadway hazards are responsible for thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths across the nation each year.

Improving Traffic Safety in River Arts District

Business owners, concerned community members and traffic engineers are working together to improve safety in Asheville's busy River Arts District (RAD). According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the City of Asheville is getting ready to lower speed limits on various high-traffic roadways in the area. Crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety, strategic rumble strips and additional traffic safety signs will also be installed over the next few months.

Car Crashes Into Brevard Storefront

On Friday afternoon, a woman drove into the storefront of a business in Brevard. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the 65-year-old woman was reportedly trying to park her vehicle, when it crashed into the front of the Safe's Attic building. Although very few details have been released about this wreck, the driver reportedly said she had mechanical issues with the brakes.

Injury Crash on Brevard Road

On Monday night, two people were injured in a crash on Brevard Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened near the Blue Ridge Parkway at about 7:00 p.m. Very few details about the crash have been released, but we do know that it was a head-on collision between a Honda and a Toyota truck. A passenger in the Honda was ejected from the vehicle. That person was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

Asheville Winter Weather Weekend Injuries

Over the weekend, there were more than 100 hospital-treated injuries related to the wintery weather in the Asheville area. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, Mission Hospital reported 111 total injures related to the weather from Saturday to Monday, January 7-9, 2017. Nearly a quarter of the injuries happened from falls. There were some cold exposure and hypothermia injuries, and a dozen injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes. The list below is a breakdown of injuries that were treated at Mission Hospital over the weekend. On average, 37 people were treated for weather-related injuries each day this weekend.

Driver on Suspended License Involved in Fatal Crash

New details have emerged about the crash that took the life of an East Henderson High School senior last week. The driver involved, Matthew Schmieder, was driving on a suspended license due to multiple wrecks and speeding violations. Prior to the crash, he was trying to pass multiple cars in a no-passing zone. Initial reports indicate that Schmieder smelled like alcohol on the scene, and drug paraphernalia was found in his belongings at the hospital. East Henderson High School senior Derek Miller was killed in the collision that happened on Kanuga Road.

NHTSA's 2016 Holiday Safety Campaign

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling on motorists to drive sober or get pulled over for the holiday season. They're also reminding drivers and all passenger vehicle occupants to buckle up for every trip, every time. Sadly, this time of year is notorious for having a spike in injury causing and fatal crashes on roadways in North Carolina and across the nation.
