Fatal Crash Involving Haywood Wagon Train

Last Friday, one person was killed and several other people were injured when a truck ran into a wagon train in Haywood County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Jonathan Creek Road. Very few details about the incident have been released, but we do know that a horse had to be euthanized on the scene too. There has been no information on how or why the truck ran into the wagon train. This collision is still under investigation with the State Highway Patrol.

Vehicle Fire on I-40

Last week, there was a vehicle fire on I-40 in McDowell County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened sometime around 9:45 on Old Fort Mountain, between mile markers 69 and 70. A Hazmat team was called to the scene, because the vehicle was transporting cleaning chemicals like chlorine and other corrosives at the time of the incident. At this time, there has been no word on what caused the fire, but first responders from a variety of agencies rushed to the scene, and traffic was reduced to one lane on the eastbound side of the roadway.

DOT to Improve Safety on Kanuga Road

After four deaths along a particular stretch of Kanuga Road since December, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) is taking steps to improve safety on the Hendersonville roadway. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the DOT is getting ready to widen the road from 9 to 11 feet. Additionally, they're also going to add an additional four-foot paved shoulder for bicycles. Also in the plans, is a sidewalk from Erikwood to Church Street.

NHTSA's Summer Road Trip Safety Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their Road Trip Safety campaign, which includes some very important Summer Driving Safety Tips. Nothing can negatively impact a carefree summer road trip quicker than mechanical trouble or a car accident, so pre-trip preparation is an essential part of travel planning. Click It or Ticket for Memorial Day Weekend

On Monday, law enforcement agencies around Ashville came together to kick off the annual Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the event was held at the Buncombe County Public Safety Training Facility. Although the State of North Carolina is above the national average for seat belt usage, Buncombe County is the seventh deadliest county in in North Carolina where passenger vehicle occupants aren't buckled up at the time of the crash. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 reports that out of the last four years, the county has averaged nine traffic deaths involving unrestrained passenger occupants.

One-Vehicle Crash on Sweeten Creek Road

On Wednesday morning, there was a one-vehicle crash on Sweeten Creek Road in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near the Givens Estate entrance sometime before 11:30 a.m. Very few details about this wreck have been released, but we do know that the vehicle involved took out power lines in the area. According to Duke Energy, approximately 600 people were without power for a couple of hours.

Injury Crash in Macon County

On Monday afternoon, five people were injured in a Macon County crash. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened near U.S. 441 and Sanderstown Road. Very few details have been released about this multi-car crash, but we do know that five people were injured, and four of them were transported to local hospitals for treatment. A four-year-old child was taken to Angel Medical Center. A driver and a passenger in one of the vehicles had to be airlifted to Mission Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. There has been no word on the cause of the crash, which is likely still under investigation with local law enforcement authorities.

Multi-Car Crash on I-40

Over the weekend, there was a multi-car crash in the eastbound lanes of I-40 in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near Exit 53. Very few details about this wreck have been released, but we do know that at least five vehicles were involved. A portion of the roadway had to be closed as crews and first responders worked the scene.

NC Proposed Traffic Safety Bill

WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently reported on a proposed bill that would penalize those going too slow in the left lane with a $200 dollar fine. If Senate Bill 303 gets passed, it will expand on the current law, which states that slower drivers should keep to the right. The fine would be used in cases where the driver is impeding the steady flow of traffic. Basically, if faster vehicles on the right are passing you while you're in the left lane, you could be facing a fine if this bill gets passed.
