On Monday night, a high-speed crash in Black Mountain left five people injured. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened at about 7:00 p.m., on East State Street in the downtown Black Mountain area. Initial reports indicate that one vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Altima, struck another vehicle at a high rate of speed at a downtown intersection. That Altima driver, Kyle Carney, was reportedly driving west on Interstate 40 when he got off on Highway 70 west. When the vehicle entered the intersection of Montreat Road and State Street at a high rate of speed, it collided with a Mazda sedan. An additional three vehicles were also struck.
Residents in a Fairview neighborhood are concerned about speeding drivers this summer. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, Spring Lake Drive, a dead-end road in a residential area, is notorious for speeders. Although the speed limit is posted at 25 miles per hour and there is also a "Children at Play" sign, drivers routinely speed through the area. One family recalled a near miss involving a speeding and possibly distracted driver. With school out, families are hoping to walks around the neighborhood safely with their children. At least one concerned citizen has raised the issue with local law enforcement, although we understand her phone calls haven't been returned.
