Improving Pedestrian Safety in Maggie Valley

Town leaders in Maggie Valley are taking steps to improve pedestrian safety on a busy roadway. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, a pedestrian safety plan is moving forward for Soco Road in the Haywood County town. Last summer, Maggie Valley received a $2.4 million grant from the Department of Transportation (DOT) for traffic calming measures along the busy main roadway. Design funding has been approved, and a plan is moving forward. Modernized crosswalks, caution lights and bike lanes are going to be implemented in the area. The plan is expected to take between three and five years to complete. 

Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Mills River

On Thursday night, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Mills River. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on N.C. 280, near the intersection of Turnpike Road, just before 8:00 p.m. Very few details have been released about this crash, but we do know that the pedestrian was near the center turn lane when he was struck.

Pedestrian Struck on Haywood Road

Last week, a pedestrian was struck and injured by a vehicle on Haywood Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near Brevard Road. Very few details about the wreck have been released, but we do know that the pedestrian was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. There has been no word on that person's current condition or the extent of injuries involved. Additionally, no information has been released on whether or not the driver involved was cited. This crash could still be under investigation with local law enforcement officials. 

Good Samaritan Hit by Truck in Buncombe County

Over the weekend, a truck hit a Good Samaritan while she was rescuing a lost dog in Buncombe County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Saturday evening on Pisgah Highway. There was a small dog running loose in the roadway, so she decided to pull over and try to save it. She was able to grab the dog before a truck hit her. She suffered from injuries ranging from a broken eye socket and lacerations on her face to a broken leg. The small dog, a Bichon Frise named Max, was rushed to a veterinary hospital and treated for minor injuries. He was reunited with his owner on Sunday.

Firefighter Killed While Cleaning Roadside Debris

Over the weekend, a vehicle fatally struck a Morganton volunteer firefighter while he was cleaning up storm debris. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, 40-year-old Jason Keith Hensley was beside Highway 70 cleaning up debris associated with Tropical Storm Nate when a truck hit him. Initial reports indicate that he was wearing reflective gear and had his vehicle's emergency lights on at the time of the crash.

Pedestrian Killed Near Tunnel Road

Over the weekend, a pedestrian was found dead on Tunnel Road, under the I-240 overpass. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened between South Tunnel Road and Crocket Avenue, sometime around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday. Very few details about this fatal pedestrian collision have been released, but we do know that Ryan Michael Rast died of injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Law enforcement officials are asking anybody with information about the crash, or anybody who was travelling through the area at about 2:00 a.m. on Saturday to contact the Asheville Police Department. The cause of this apparent hit-and-run crash remains under investigation. 

Pedestrian Hit in Asheville

Last week, a vehicle in Asheville hit a pedestrian on Crowell Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near the Rodeway Inn, sometime before 8:00 p.m. on Thursday night. Very few details have been released about this incident, but we do know that law enforcement officers with the Asheville Police Department were on the scene until about 11:00 p.m. investigating what happened. There has been no word on the cause of the crash or the extent of injuries involved.
