Semi Truck Restrictions on I-26

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is rolling out a new restriction targeting semi trucks on an area of Interstate 26 in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, this week, the NCDOT will be unveiling signs restricting trucks from the far left lane between French Broad River and Long Shoals Road. These efforts are aimed at improving safety through a reduction of congestion-related crashes and driving delays caused by trucks traveling side-by-side uphill toward the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Restrictions on Tractor Trailers on I-26

According to data, that particular section of I-26 has average speeds of between 30 and 35 miles per hour during peak travel times. Officials with the NCDOT are hoping the restrictions will improve mobility and safety for motorists in the area. The restrictions will prohibit large trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 26,000 pounds from using the left-most lane of I-26 in both directions. This restriction is going into effect immediately, and State Highway Patrol troopers will be monitoring the area.

Truck Driver Injured in Haywood County

On Tuesday night, a truck driver was seriously injured in a crash on I-40 in Haywood County. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 reports that the wreck happened in the westbound lanes, about a mile from the Fines Creek Road exit. Very few details have been released about this semi truck crash, but initial reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle and it hit the center median divider. Debris from the crash hit several cars in the eastbound lanes. The truck driver had to be airlifted to Mission Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, but there has been no word on that person's current condition, and this truck crash is still under investigation.

Truck Accidents in Asheville

In addition to the traditional rules of the road, truck drivers and trucking companies have additional rules and regulations to follow. Since these vehicles are so much larger and heavier than traditional passenger occupant vehicles, it's essential that all trucks and trucking companies be in compliance with federal and state safety regulations.
