Super Bowl Safety in Asheville

Officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are calling on fans to celebrate the Super Bowl responsibly. Because the Super Bowl has become synonymous with alcohol consumption and an increase in drunk driving crashes on roadways across the nation, the NHTSA's "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday, and all yearlong.

U.S. Drunk Driving Crash Stats

In 2017, 10,874 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes.

Fatalities in alcohol-impaired driving crashes accounted for 29 percent of all traffic crash deaths in 2017.

On average, one alcohol-impaired driving fatality happened every 48 minutes in 2017.

The total estimated economic cost of alcohol-impaired driving crashes in the U.S. in 2010 was $44 billion.

The 21 to 24-year-old age group had the highest percentage (27 percent) of drivers with BACs of .08 g/dL or higher in fatal crashes when compared with other age groups in 2017.

Designate a Driver for the Big Game

Whether you're going to a friend's house or your favorite sports bar, make sure to designate a driver before the big game. If you don't have a designated driver, make sure you have a plan to get home safely. This can be as simple as using a rideshare app or calling a taxi. Just make a plan ahead of time, so you're not scrambling at the end of the night. Download the app or pre-program the cab company's number into your phone before you start celebrating the game with alcohol. The NHTSA wants motorists to know that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving too, so make sure to get a safe ride home, even if you've had "just a few."
