Squirrel Box Derby Race Injuries

Over the weekend, an incident during the White Squirrel Festival in Brevard sent five people to the hospital. According to WLOS ABC News channel 13, a wooden car in the Squirrel Box Derby race veered off course and into the crowd. The wreck happened as racers were going down "Jailhouse Hill" on Broad Street, between Main and French Broad Street.

Report offers insight into large truck accidents

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released its final 2016 Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts report. The final numbers went public in May 2018, which was about a year after preliminary data was released. According to the report, large truck fatal crashes were up 3 percent over the previous year. There was no North Carolina-specific information released. While the number of fatal large truck crashes increased, the large-truck involvement rate remained steady.

Improving Pedestrian Safety in Asheville

Officials in Asheville are working to improve pedestrian safety at a busy intersection in town. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the City of Asheville is installing crosswalks, pedestrian islands and flashing beacons at the intersection of Biltmore Avenue, Southside Avenue and South Charlotte Street. This is becoming a popular area for pedestrians, but the intersection has a lot of heavy vehicle traffic too. In the past, the busy intersection hasn't been very pedestrian friendly, so safety advocates are hoping the new upgrades will help to improve pedestrian safety in the area.

Four Injured in Buncombe County Van Crash

On Monday morning, four people were injured when a van crashed into an off-duty police officer's vehicle in Buncombe County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at New Leicester Highway and Newfound Road. Initial reports indicate that the 69-year-old van driver ran a stop sign and crashed into the off-duty cop's car.

Fatal Crash Involving Church Van

On Sunday evening, there was a fatal crash involving a church van in Wake County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened near Zebulon Road and Barham Siding Road at about 5:30 p.m. Very few details about this crash have been released, but we do know that there were multiple fatalities and at least 10 people were injured. Initial reports indicate that a church van and another car swerved to avoid hitting a deer. The church van rolled over, and both vehicles landed in a swampy area near the roadway. According to the church, a group of members took the van to drop off clothes and food to a children's home.

Infant Rescued From Crash on Fairview

Last week, a Good Samaritan rescued an infant from a wrecked car on Fairview Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the vehicle landed on its side against the glass wall of Sona Pharmacy in East Asheville. Although very few details about this wreck have been released, initial reports indicate that the driver lost control of his vehicle and it crashed passenger-side down into the glass wall of Sona Pharmacy and Clinic.

Operation Safe Driver Week coming in July

North Carolina drivers should be aware that Operation Safe Driver Week is scheduled to take place the week of July 15-21. During the initiative, which is organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, law enforcement agencies will focus on preventing unsafe driving behaviors by the operators of both passenger and commercial vehicles.

NHTSA: May is Bicycle Safety Month

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently observing National Bicycle Safety Month. During the Month of May, officials with the NHTSA are calling on roadway users to be "Roll Models." During this time, the NHTSA will be promoting their bicycle safety campaign in efforts to raise awareness about the dangers facing cyclists on U.S. roadways. Bicycle riders, like motorcyclists and pedestrians, are still one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups. Although there are steps that cyclists can take to improve their personal safety, bicycle safety needs to be a top priority for motorists too.

SUV Crashes into Fletcher House

Over the weekend, an SUV crashed into a home in Fletcher. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Grove End Road on Saturday. Very little information has been released about this crash, but we do know that an older model SUV crashed into the garage portion of a home. Initial reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle while driving down the hill.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Governor Roy Cooper is currently raising awareness about the dangers facing motorcycle riders in North Carolina. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, you're five times more likely to be injured in a motorcycle crash than any other type of vehicle, and you're 29 times more likely to die. Motorcycle riders are still one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups in North Carolina and across the nation. At this time, the Asheville Police Department is increasing motorcycle patrols in the Town Mountain area. They're also encouraging riders to wear protective gear and helmets.

Injury Crash at Railroad Crossing in Waynesville

Last week, a man was injured when a train hit his vehicle at a railroad crossing in Waynesville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at Smathers and Commerce, near Giles Chemical. Very few details about this collision have been released, but we do know that an elderly man's vehicle was struck while crossing railroad tracks. Initial reports indicate that he didn't hear the approaching train when he went to cross the tracks.

National Safety Council hopes to eliminate traffic deaths

In the 1950s, it seemed unlikely that the United States could send an astronaut to the moon. However, the country's best scientists banded together to make it happen. The CEO of the National Safety Council referenced that great achievement when announcing the organization's new plan to eliminate all traffic deaths throughout the country, including in North Carolina, by 2050.

Activity Bus Fire in Haywood County

Over the weekend, a Macon County Schools activity bus caught fire on the way back from a field trip. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened in Haywood County, on Interstate 40, near Canton. Very few details about this incident have been released, but initial reports indicate that a blown tire may have caused the fire. The driver reportedly heard a popping noise and saw smoke coming from the vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that a tire blowout might have caused damage to the brake lining or brake shoe, causing the tire to catch fire.
