How to protect yourself against distracted drivers

During your next commute to work, once you have stopped at a light, take a minute and look around at the other drivers. The majority of them will be attempting to "multi-task" by eating, putting on lipstick or texting while manning their vehicle. These are tell-tale signs of the inattentive driver. Controlling the actions of others is impossible but there are several things you can do to safeguard yourself against people who are only half-paying attention to driving.
