Moped Rider Struck by Ambulance in Asheville

Over the weekend, an ambulance in Asheville struck a moped rider. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Saturday afternoon on Hendersonville Road, between Sycamore Drive and Glenn Bridge Road. Very few details about the crash have been released, but we do know that the moped rider was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

Drunk Driver Fatally Hits 14-Year-Old on ATV

Over the weekend, a drunk driver struck and killed a teen that was riding an ATV in Burke County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, 14-year-old Jacob Wright and his friend were riding an ATV when they were struck by an SUV. Wright was killed in the wreck, and his friend was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of critical injuries. The driver, Steve Carroll, was charged with DWI and driving with a revoked license. In addition to having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle at the time of the crash, he also admitted to taking pain pills. His three-year-old granddaughter was in the vehicle at the time of the crash too. 

Fatal Crash Involving Truck in McDowell County

On Tuesday, two people were killed in a crash involving a dump truck in McDowell County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on NC-226. Very few details about this fatal crash have been released, but we do know that one person was airlifted to Mission Trauma Center for treatment, and two others were pronounced dead on the scene. Initial reports indicate that a dump truck was headed southbound downhill on 226, and that speed may have been a factor. 

South Carolina: High Rate of Motorcycle Fatalities

South Carolina is one of the most dangerous states for motorcycle riders. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, there were 135 motorcyclist deaths on South Carolina roadways last year. A report from the Post and Courier found that South Carolina's average fatality rate over a five-year period ending in 2015 was the second highest of states in the Southeast region. Nearly three-quarters of motorcycle riders who died on roadways in South Carolina over the past 10 years were not wearing a helmet at the time of their crashes. Riders are quick to point out a variety of factors that contribute to the fatality rate in South Carolina, including bad roads and inattentive drivers.  

DOT to Improve Safety on Kanuga Road

After four deaths along a particular stretch of Kanuga Road since December, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) is taking steps to improve safety on the Hendersonville roadway. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the DOT is getting ready to widen the road from 9 to 11 feet. Additionally, they're also going to add an additional four-foot paved shoulder for bicycles. Also in the plans, is a sidewalk from Erikwood to Church Street.

Big Rig Damages Storefront in Black Mountain

On Friday, a big rig damaged a Dollar General store in Black Mountain. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 12:00 a.m. at the Dollar General store on U.S. Highway 70. Very few details about this wreck have been released, but we do know that the semi truck got caught in the store's awning. Initial reports indicate that the truck driver may have been trying to turn around in the parking lot at the time of the incident. There has been no word on whether or not the driver was facing any citations or charges after the wreck. This crash could still be under investigation with local authorities. 

Transylvania County Bicycle Wreck

Last week, a cyclist in Transylvania County was airlifted to the hospital after a crash. According to WLOS ABC NEWS Channel 13, the incident happened on Blantyre Church Road sometime around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Very few details about this bicycle crash have been released, but we do know that first responders with Little River Fire Department were on the scene. Initial reports indicate that the bicyclist may have slid on gravel during a downhill stretch. Her bicycle slid into a ditch beside the roadway. 

NC Trooper Struck and Injured on I-95

On Monday, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol Officer was injured when a suspected drunk driver struck his vehicle. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened along the side of Interstate 95 near Fayetteville. At the time of the crash, the trooper was beside I-95 investigating another wreck. The suspected drunk driver slammed into his cruiser, which struck him and tossed him into the air. He landed on his back beside the roadway. The tow truck driver and another driver were also injured in the crash.
