Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Long Shoals Road

Last week, there was a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a van in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Friday afternoon on Long Shoals Road near The Forest at Biltmore Park. Very little information has been released about this crash, but we do know that one person was killed in the wreck. Following the crash, local law enforcement officials were urging drivers and riders to exercise additional caution or roadways prior to the holiday weekend. There has been no word on whether or not any charges or citations have been made. This wreck is likely still under investigation with law enforcement officers.

U.S. Motorcycle Crashes by The Numbers

  • In 2015, an estimated 88,000 motorcyclists were injured in crashes in the U.S.
  • There were 4,976 motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2015.
  • Per vehicle mile travelled in 2015, motorcyclist fatalities occurred nearly 29 times more often than passenger occupant traffic fatalities.
  • Helmets saved an estimated 1,772 motorcyclists in 2015.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Since May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been raising awareness about the importance of Sharing the Road. Drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for motorcyclists and other roadway users. Sharing the Road also means making a commitment to distraction-free driving. You can't safely share the road with motorcyclists if you're texting or looking at your phone. Motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable roadway user groups. They don't have the same safety protections as passenger vehicle occupants, and they can become ejected from their bikes during crashes.

Motorcycle Accidents in Asheville

Even at relatively low speeds, motorcycle accidents can leave riders in the hospital or worse. Without the added protection of seat belts, steel cages and air bags, riders can become catastrophically or fatally injured in crashes involving traditional passenger occupant vehicles. Riders can still get injured even though they're wearing helmets.
