Click It or Ticket for Memorial Day Weekend

On Monday, law enforcement agencies around Ashville came together to kick off the annual Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the event was held at the Buncombe County Public Safety Training Facility. Although the State of North Carolina is above the national average for seat belt usage, Buncombe County is the seventh deadliest county in North Carolina where passenger vehicle occupants aren't buckled up at the time of the crash. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 reports that out of the last four years, the county has averaged nine traffic deaths involving unrestrained passenger occupants.

Seat Belt Usage by The Numbers

In 2015, seat belts saved 13,941 lives across the nation.

An additional 2,804 lives could have been saved if everyone had buckled up.

In 2016, nationwide seat belt usage hit an all-time high of 90 percent.

North Carolina had 91.7 percent seat belt usage in 2016.

In 2016, 452 unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants were killed in North Carolina.

An additional 601 unrestrained passenger occupants were seriously injured in North Carolina crashes in 2016.

Click It or Ticket

This year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is focusing their Click It or Ticket Campaign on how the life saved could be yours. Even with the latest technological innovations in automotive safety technology hitting the scene on a regular basis, seat belts are still the most effective safety device in an automobile. Buckling up is the absolute best way to protect yourself in the event of a crash. Air bags only work when passenger occupants are buckled up. This year, the NHTSA and other public safety agencies across the nation are calling on drivers and passengers to buckle up for every trip, every time, no matter how far you're going.
