Commercial Trucking Safety on Mountain Roads

WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently looked into commercial trucking safety on mountain roads in and around Asheville. The News 13 Investigative Team wanted to find out if it's legal for semi trucks to take smaller country roads, like Highway 208, to bypass weigh stations in the area. According to a North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP) Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement division officer, it depends on the situation. It's legal for some trucks to travel on smaller roads, but not for others. For example, on Highway 208, trailers over 48 feet are banned for safety reasons. If drivers disregard safety regulations to make time, avoid weigh stations or get around safety inspections, they're putting lives at risk.

Fatal Henderson County Crash

On Saturday afternoon, there was a fatal crash in Henderson County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened at about 3:00 p.m. on Crab Creek Road, near Curtis Drive. For currently unknown reasons, a westbound Ford pickup truck crossed the centerline and struck a Chrysler head-on. The pickup truck driver, a 44-year-old man from South Carolina, was killed in the crash.

Big Rig Crash in Asheville

On Monday morning, a semi truck overturned on Old Chunns Cove Road in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 9:00 a.m. near Tunnel Road. The truck driver, 40-year-old Ricky Clayton of Dade City, Florida, was reportedly unfamiliar with the area. He drove the big rig up Beaucatcher Road, over the tunnel and went left of center. His truck went off the embankment and overturned. Thankfully, there were no other vehicles involved in the crash. Crews were on the scene for hours clearing the wreckage and dealing with the frozen meat cargo he was hauling. 

Injury Crash on Brevard Road

On Monday night, two people were injured in a crash on Brevard Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened near the Blue Ridge Parkway at about 7:00 p.m. Very few details about the crash have been released, but we do know that it was a head-on collision between a Honda and a Toyota truck. A passenger in the Honda was ejected from the vehicle. That person was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries. 

Fatal DWI Crash in Transylvania County

Last week, there was a fatal crash on Rosman Highway in Transylvania County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the collision happened on U.S. 64 (Rosman Highway) near the Sav-Mor, going toward Lake Toxaway, at about 1:11 p.m. A Ford F-250 truck, driven by 68-year-old Thomas Corbin McCall, was headed west when it crossed the centerline. It collided head-on with a Ford Escape. The driver in the Ford Escape, 61-year-old Mildred Elizabeth Norton, was killed in the crash. McCall was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, and he was charged with DWI, misdemeanor death by vehicle and traveling left of center.

Rolling Roadblocks in Haywood County

On Sunday afternoon, law enforcement officers conducted rolling roadblocks on I-40 to clear the area of ice and snow. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, there was a multi-car crash along Waterville Road in Haywood County. Drivers were asked to avoid the area, and delays were reported.

Asheville Winter Weather Weekend Injuries

Over the weekend, there were more than 100 hospital-treated injuries related to the wintery weather in the Asheville area. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, Mission Hospital reported 111 total injures related to the weather from Saturday to Monday, January 7-9, 2017. Nearly a quarter of the injuries happened from falls. There were some cold exposure and hypothermia injuries, and a dozen injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes. The list below is a breakdown of injuries that were treated at Mission Hospital over the weekend. On average, 37 people were treated for weather-related injuries each day this weekend. 

Moped Driver Killed in Semi Truck Crash

Last week, a moped driver was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident occurred at about noon on Thursday in Marion. Very few details about the head-on collision between the moped and the 18-wheeler have been released, but we do know that the wreck happened on North Main Street. The truck driver was not injured in the crash, and the cause of the head-on collision is still under investigation with law enforcement officials. 

DWI Arrests Down in Buncombe County

Law enforcement officials in Buncombe County just announced that the number of Driving While Impaired (DWI) arrests made over the New Year's holiday enforcement period was down from last year's numbers. Over the holiday weekend, law enforcement agencies in North Carolina and across the nation were out in full force cracking down on drunk driving and other traffic safety violations. In addition to increased enforcement and patrols, there were also enhanced educational efforts to get the word out about safe transportation alternatives.
