Motorcycle Crash on I-40

Last week, a motorcycle crash in Asheville sent one person to the hospital. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near the Biltmore Estate exit. The motorcycle rider was reportedly merging into traffic when he somehow lost control of his bike. He struck a guardrail and was injured in the crash. Initial reports indicate that he suffered from serious injuries. He was transported to the hospital for treatment. 

Buncombe County Semi Truck Crash

Last week, a semi truck crash left traffic backed up in Buncombe County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the one-vehicle crash happened sometime before 6:00 a.m. on Sweeten Creek Road at Hendersonville Road. For currently unknown reasons, the truck left the roadway and hit a telephone pole. The tractor-trailer came to rest on its side next to the roadway. The wreck resulted in telephone and internet lines being strewn about the railroad tracks.

Henderson County Fatal Bicycle Crash

Last week, a cyclist was struck and killed in Henderson County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Friday afternoon at the intersection of Howard Gap Road and Whispering Hills Drive. The cyclist, 71-year-old Brent Yingling, was struck and killed by a Jeep Wrangler after riding into the intersection. At this time, very few details about the crash have been released.

Operation Drive to Live 2016

Officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol are hoping to increase roadway safety for teens and other motorists during Operation "Drive to Live" this week. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, this pre-prom season safety campaign will be conducted between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. This safety initiative is aimed at reducing the number of teen related injury causing and fatal crashes around the state. In addition to enforcing all traffic laws around the state's schools, officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol will also be conducting traffic safety education programs at various high schools prior to the end of the school year. 

Fatal Wrong Way Crash in Haywood County

Early Monday morning, a wrong-way crash took the life of one person in Haywood County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on I-40 near the Highway 74 exit, sometime after 3:00 a.m. Apparently, a van was headed the wrong way, when it crashed into a semi truck, head on. The van and the large truck caught fire, and the driver of the van was pronounced dead on the scene. 

Truck Crash on I-40

On Tuesday morning, a crash involving a dump truck had traffic backed up in Asheville for hours. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on the ramp to I-40 west at Highway 74.  Although very few details have been released, we do know that a large piece of heavy equipment fell off of the back of the truck's trailer. The equipment fell onto an oncoming car. Apparently, the driver of the dump truck was travelling too fast for the roadway conditions.

Cyclists Raise Awareness For Roadway Safety

Last week, a group of cyclists in Asheville took off on a 400-mile trek to Atlanta to raise awareness about roadway safety. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, riders with PeopleForBikes, fundraises to improve cyclist safety in all communities and raise awareness about bicycle safety advocacy. The 2016 itinerary included Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville, Athens and Atlanta.

Fatal Crash Near Marion

Officials have released new information about the fatal crash that occurred near Marion last month. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the fiery collision happened on U.S. 221 North, near Marion at about 3:30 p.m. on March 23, 2016. Three people were killed in the crash that involved a pickup truck and a van. Although there were no skid marks on the scene, the pickup reportedly crossed the center lane and struck the oncoming van. Initial witness reports indicate that the truck might have been driving erratically prior to the crash.
