Teen Driver Safety Week 2014

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is getting ready for National Teen Driver Safety Week, which is from October 19 - 25, this year. Since motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death for teens ages 14 to 18, the NHTSA is making this issue a top priority. The NHTSA's "5 to Drive" rules are targeted at raising awareness about the five biggest issues facing teen drivers. 

Multiple Wrecks in Asheville

Traffic on I-26 and I-40 was backed up on Wednesday morning as crews worked to clear multiple crash scenes. At about 8:00 a.m. on I-40, two separate wrecks involving at least 10 cars sent three people to the hospital. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, lanes near the Sweeten Creek Road exit had to be closed until nearly 10:00 a.m. as crews worked the scenes. 

Construction Worker Killed on I-40

Early Friday morning, a construction worker was struck and killed by a motorist on I-40. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened sometime around 2:00 a.m., near Morganton. For currently unknown reasons, the driver of a pickup truck drover through construction cones in the work zone and struck three workers. First responders were swiftly on the scene, but one of the victims died on the way to the hospital. Reportedly, one of the victims was seriously injured, and another was treated for injuries and released. Very little information has been released on the extent of those injuries. 

Firefighter Killed in Franklin County Crash

On Tuesday afternoon, a tanker truck with Justice Rural Volunteer Fire Department overturned and took the life of a firefighter. The incident happened when the department was responding to a call near Louisburg. Fur currently unknown reasons, the tanker truck overturned. The driver was killed, and another firefighter was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries. 

Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Spartanburg

On Monday morning, a fatal hit-and-run crash happened on I-26 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 5:00 a.m., near mile marker 29, just south of Highway 221. For currently unknown reasons, a pickup truck trailing a golf cart lost control and crashed into a median on I-26. The two occupants in the vehicle were not buckled up and were ejected. The driver, 48-year-old Timothy Holden, landed in the median and was rushed to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries. 

Separate Fatal Crashes involving Asheville Citizens

Family members, loved ones, friends and coworkers are mourning the losses of two young men who were killed in car crashes last week. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 reports that Brandon Bridges, 19-years-old, was killed in a one-car cash on Saturday morning. For currently unknown reasons, his automobile left the roadway on Bear Creek Road and struck a tree. This fatal wreck happened just days after a fatal wreck in Henderson County that took the life of a 26-year-old man. 

School Bus Crash in Dana

On Thursday morning, a school bus crash in Dana sent 15 children to the hospital. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the one-vehicle crash happened sometime after 7:30 a.m. on Deep Gap Road. For currently unknown reasons, the Dana Elementary school bus ran off the right side of the road. The bus stuck a culvert and came to rest on its side in a ditch beside the roadway. 

Well-Known Motorcyclist Killed on Blue Ridge Parkway

On Friday night, well-known motorcyclist Don Tilley died in a crash on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Mile Post 394. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened sometime around 8:00 p.m. His passenger and wife, Robinette, was critically injured and rushed to Mission Hospital. For currently unknown reasons, their motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into an embankment.
