Teen Killed in Upstate Crash

Early Sunday morning, a teen from Charlotte was killed in an Upstate crash. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Augusta Road. For currently unknown reasons, the car veered off of the roadway and rolled several times. 18-year-old Keundra Smith was ejected from the vehicle. Although she was airlifted to the hospital, she did not survive her injuries. Her cousin, who was injured in the crash, was driving the car.

Car Crashes Into Buncombe Home

On Wednesday afternoon, a car crashed through a mobile home in Buncombe County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 3:00 p.m. in Swannanoa on Linn Garden Lane.  At this time, there's no word on how or why the car crashed through the home. At least one person was injured in the collision, and two walls of the home were compromised.

NHTSA's Winter Driving Tips

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently publicizing their annual winter driving safety campaign. Their "Focus on Safety- Winter Driving" campaign is all about preparation before driving and safety behind the wheel. Drivers in Asheville and the surrounding areas could face a variety of different wintry weather conditions this season. From ice and sleet to blizzard-like storms, Asheville motorists need to be prepared for anything.

Fatal Hendersonville Road Crash

On Monday morning, a South Carolina man was killed in a crash on Hendersonville Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened sometime after 6:30 a.m. near the Blue Ridge Parkway overpass. For currently unknown reasons, 56-year-old David Earl Gosnell's truck crossed over four lanes of traffic and collided with another vehicle. Gosnell did not survive his injuries, and the driver in the other vehicle was transported to Mission Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

National Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

Last week was National Drowsy Driving Prevention Week (November 1-8, 2015), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hosted a forum to launch a new drowsy-driving initiative. Experts from the fields of sleep science, traffic safety and public health joined together to share information on the dangers of drowsy driving and increase awareness about the nationwide problem. While drowsy driving may not sound as dangerous as distracted or impaired driving, consider that tired drivers are not only at risk for falling asleep behind the wheel, but they also have slower reaction times than drivers who aren't drowsy.  

NCDOT Warns of Deer-Related Collisions

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is warning drivers to keep an eye out for deer in the coming months. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, half of all animal-related collisions for the year will happen between now and the end of the year. Sergeant Toby Jenkins with the Wildlife Resources Commission says that drivers should be particularly watchful for deer at dawn and dusk, when the animals are most active.

Four USC Students Killed in Crash

Early Sunday morning, four USC Upstate college students were killed in a crash on Valley Falls Road. Horace Sproull, Sarah Vande Berg, James Campbell and Josh Lee all died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, one student, Felicia Ahlborg, survived the crash and is in fair condition. At this time, very few details about the one-car crash have been released. We do know that the car ran off of the roadway, struck a tree and burst into flames. 

NHTSA's Pre-Season Drunk Driving Prevention

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is getting ready to publicize their annual pre-holiday season drunk driving prevention campaign. Unfortunately, with the holiday season approaching, we're likely to see an increase in injury-causing and fatal drunk driving crashes in North Carolina and across the country. In addition to raising awareness about the dangers and costs of drunk driving, there will also be increased law enforcement efforts, as we get closer to the holiday season.

Fatal Crash on NC 191

A single-vehicle crash took the life of a Henderson County man last week. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, 20-year-old Nicholas Andrew Woodring lost control of his vehicle on NC 191 near Grand View Lane last Tuesday. The vehicle ran off of the roadway and struck several trees before overturning in a wooded area. Initially thought to be missing, a friend of the family's found the vehicle in deep brush beside the roadway.
