Multiple Crashes in Weaverville

On Monday, there were multiple crashes on Interstate 26 in Weaverville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, three crashes happened near exit 19 on I-26. There were four vehicles involved in the initial wreck, which did occur during inclement weather. The other two crashes happened in the traffic sometime after the initial wreck. At least one person was injured, but there's no word on that person's current condition or the extent of injuries involved. Motorists in the area reported heavy rain and wet roads at the time of the crash. At this time, no information has been released on whether or not any citations were made or the official causes of each of the crashes. 

Camper Trailer Crash in Asheville

On Sunday, there was a crash involving a truck and a camper trailer in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at about 1:17 p.m. Although very few details have been released, initial reports indicate that a camper trailer came unhitched from a truck around mile marker 47. The camper trailer ran off onto the shoulder of the roadway.

Driver Asleep at Wheel in Weaverville

In the early morning hours on Friday, a driver fell asleep at the wheel and caused a crash near Weaverville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened in the westbound lanes of I-26 at about 1:45 a.m. The driver of a Chevrolet Suburban reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel and lost control of the vehicle. The SUV struck a guardrail and rolled several times. Thankfully, that person did not suffer from serious injuries. First responders were swiftly on the scene, where traffic had to be diverted to the New Stock Road exit. A portion of the roadway was closed until about 3:15 a.m. The driver involved was charged with reckless driving.

Fatal Labor Day Weekend Crash

On Monday night, a driver was killed in a car crash in Macon County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened sometime after 8:00 p.m. on U.S. 441 near Mulberry Road. Very few details have been released about this crash, but the driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle. The Mustang crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a southbound pickup truck, causing the truck to spin and go over the guardrail.

Safety Concerns on Ledbetter Road

Community members in Jackson County are calling on lawmakers to improve safety on Ledbetter Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, a fatal hit-and-run crash took the life of 40-year-old Daniel Brown earlier this summer. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is getting ready to receive $125,000, and community members in Jackson County are hoping for an access road that could be used by residents and Western Carolina University students.

Safety Concerns About Asheville Parking

Residents in an Asheville neighborhood have concerns about safety involving a new on-street parking policy. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the new staggered parking policy on Fairfax Avenue was implemented in efforts to slow the traffic down in the residential area. At least one resident is worried that the staggered parking will slow down first responders who may have difficulty navigating swiftly through the street.

Fourth of July Traffic Citations

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has recently released their list of citations issued over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 just reported on the various traffic citations that were issued over the busy holiday weekend. Across the state, the most cited offence was not drunk driving but driver's license violations. Listed below are the types and number of citations issued over the Independence Day weekend. This particular public safety campaign did not include statistics for speeding, because most of these citations were issued at traffic checkpoint locations.

Driver Injured in Lake Toxaway Crash

Late on Sunday night, a driver was injured in a Lake Toxaway crash. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Silversteen Road, sometime after 10:00 p.m. The driver reportedly ran off of the road, went down an embankment and struck a tree. Very few details about this crash have been released, but initial reports indicate that speed could have been a factor.

Traffic Deaths up 7.7 Percent in 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a press release regarding preliminary car crash data from 2015. According to the NHTSA, there was a 7.7 percent increase in motor vehicle traffic deaths in 2015. An estimated 35,200 people were killed in car crashes in 2015. That's up from the 32,675 deaths reported in 2014. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx was quick to point out that every American should be able to drive, ride or walk to their destinations safely. At this time, the NHTSA is analyzing the data to determine how and why there was such an increase in car crash fatalities last year.

Jail for Driver Who Intentionally Caused Wrecks

Last week, a man in Asheville was found guilty of intentionally causing 12 car crashes. According to the Citizen-Times, 27-year-old Byron Fulghum was sentenced to a year behind bars and ordered to bay $45,363.08 in restitution to insurance companies and victims. He was found guilty of six felony counts of insurance fraud, four misdemeanor counts of injury to personal property, four misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon and four misdemeanor counts of reckless driving to endanger.
