NC Trooper Struck and Injured on I-95

On Monday, a North Carolina State Highway Patrol Officer was injured when a suspected drunk driver struck his vehicle. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened along the side of Interstate 95 near Fayetteville. At the time of the crash, the trooper was beside I-95 investigating another wreck. The suspected drunk driver slammed into his cruiser, which struck him and tossed him into the air. He landed on his back beside the roadway. The tow truck driver and another driver were also injured in the crash.

Click It or Ticket for Memorial Day Weekend

On Monday, law enforcement agencies around Ashville came together to kick off the annual Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the event was held at the Buncombe County Public Safety Training Facility. Although the State of North Carolina is above the national average for seat belt usage, Buncombe County is the seventh deadliest county in in North Carolina where passenger vehicle occupants aren't buckled up at the time of the crash. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 reports that out of the last four years, the county has averaged nine traffic deaths involving unrestrained passenger occupants.

Multi-Car Crash on I-40

Over the weekend, there was a multi-car crash in the eastbound lanes of I-40 in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near Exit 53. Very few details about this wreck have been released, but we do know that at least five vehicles were involved. A portion of the roadway had to be closed as crews and first responders worked the scene.

NC Proposed Traffic Safety Bill

WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently reported on a proposed bill that would penalize those going too slow in the left lane with a $200 dollar fine. If Senate Bill 303 gets passed, it will expand on the current law, which states that slower drivers should keep to the right. The fine would be used in cases where the driver is impeding the steady flow of traffic. Basically, if faster vehicles on the right are passing you while you're in the left lane, you could be facing a fine if this bill gets passed.

Car Flips Off of Embankment in Asheville

On Sunday night, a vehicle flipped off of an embankment in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 9:00 p.m. on Tunnel Road near the Econo Lodge. Very few details about this one-car crash have been released, but initial reports indicate that it may have been a case of pedal error. The driver thought he or she was hitting the brake, when in reality, they were hitting the gas pedal while the vehicle was in reverse.

Injury Crash on I-26

Last week, there was an injury crash on Interstate 26 in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened in the early morning hours in the westbound lanes near the I-40 and I-240 interchange. For currently unknown reasons, a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed through a guardrail. That driver was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries including a broken nose and a broken back. Additionally, a second driver was unable to avoid the wreckage and struck some of the debris in the roadway.

Person Injured by Rolling Car

Earlier this week, a person was injured after trying to stop a rolling car in Asheville. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Monday night at the Asheville Regional Airport. Apparently, a driver was at the airport to pick somebody up when he or she got out of the vehicle. The car was reportedly still in gear and kept rolling. Another person reportedly tried to stop the car and was injured in the process. That person was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment of injuries. There has been no word on the extent of injuries, the person's current condition or the make and model of the car involved.

Safety Concerns on Ledbetter Road

Community members in Jackson County are calling on lawmakers to improve safety on Ledbetter Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, a fatal hit-and-run crash took the life of 40-year-old Daniel Brown earlier this summer. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is getting ready to receive $125,000, and community members in Jackson County are hoping for an access road that could be used by residents and Western Carolina University students.

Safety Concerns About Asheville Parking

Residents in an Asheville neighborhood have concerns about safety involving a new on-street parking policy. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the new staggered parking policy on Fairfax Avenue was implemented in efforts to slow the traffic down in the residential area. At least one resident is worried that the staggered parking will slow down first responders who may have difficulty navigating swiftly through the street.
