Pedestrian Critically Injured in Canton

On Monday afternoon, a pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a car in Canton. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 2:00 p.m. along Highway 110. Very few details about this collision have been released, but we do know that a Jeep Cherokee struck the 40-year-old woman. She was reportedly walking along the roadside before crossing the road to join her husband. She was rushed to Mission Hospital for treatment of head trauma and other injuries. There has been no word on whether or not the driver involved is facing citations or charges. This wreck is likely still under investigation with local law enforcement authorities.

Hendersonville Sidewalk for Pedestrian Safety

A new sidewalk project in Hendersonville is expected to improve pedestrian safety on a portion of Four Seasons Boulevard. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, approximately 1,000 feet of sidewalk is being installed in an area with a lot of fast food restaurants. There is already heavy foot traffic in the area, and pedestrians are hoping the sidewalk will help to improve safety.

Driver Injures Pedestrian in Franklin

Last week, a driver hit a pedestrian in a Wal-Mart Parking lot in Franklin. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Thursday afternoon at about 4:30 p.m. The victim, a 68-year-old woman, was struck by a pickup truck that was traveling through the parking lot at about 10 miles per hour. The driver said the sun was in his eyes at the time of the collision.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Buncombe County

On Wednesday night, a pedestrian was struck by a car and killed in Buncombe County. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened sometime before 7:00 p.m. on Pisgah Highway. Very few details have been released about the fatal pedestrian collision, but we do know that 85-year-old William Rogers was trying to cross the road to meet people for church when he was struck and killed.

Slow Down Asheville Campaign

Community members in Asheville are calling on officials to put a crosswalk at the intersection of Patton Avenue and New Leicester Highway. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the Slow Down Asheville campaign is raising awareness about pedestrian safety at a busy intersection. They even have an online petition for concerned community members and local safety advocates to sign. They're hoping to get enough signatures in the next couple of weeks to present the petition to DOT officials. At this time, the nearest crosswalks are between a quarter mile and a half a mile away.

Lumberton Teen Killed in Hit and Run

On Saturday evening, a teen pedestrian in Lumberton was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 7:15 p.m. on a road about a mile east of town. Although very few details have been released, the teen was reportedly a student at Fairmont High School.

Pedestrian Killed in Greenville

On Saturday, a pedestrian in Greenville County was struck and killed by a car. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened at about 1:45 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 14 and Stonebrook Farm Way. The driver apparently lost control of their vehicle and struck the jogger. The victim, 44-year-old Andrew Vanevera, was jogging with a friend at the time of the collision.

Pedestrian Killed in Woodfin

On Monday evening, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Woodfin, North Carolina. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened on Riverside Drive near Walnut Lane, sometime before 6:00 p.m. At this time, very few details have been released about the collision. We do know that the female pedestrian was transported to Mission Hospital, but she did not survive her injuries. Local law enforcement authorities are currently conducting an investigation including crash scene reconstruction, and at this time, they do not suspect driver impairment. No charges have been filed, and the authorities have not released the identity of the victim.

Protecting Pedestrians in Asheville

Last year, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) named Asheville the most dangerous city for pedestrians. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, as part of the "Watch for Me" safety campaign, officers with the Asheville Police Department are getting ready to launch an initiative to crack down on pedestrian violations across the city. Starting in September, they'll be ticketing jaywalkers. 

Improving Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety in Asheville

Officials with the City of Asheville are hoping to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, Asheville has the highest pedestrian accident rate in the State of North Carolina. The city will be releasing a public safety campaign called "Watch for Me" next week. A spokesperson from the Ashville Police Department reports that this initiative is all about trying to decrease fatal and injury-causing accidents.
