Slow Down Asheville Campaign

Community members in Asheville are calling on officials to put a crosswalk at the intersection of Patton Avenue and New Leicester Highway. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the Slow Down Asheville campaign is raising awareness about pedestrian safety at a busy intersection. They even have an online petition for concerned community members and local safety advocates to sign. They're hoping to get enough signatures in the next couple of weeks to present the petition to DOT officials. At this time, the nearest crosswalks are between a quarter mile and a half a mile away.

Semi Truck Fire on I-40

Early Monday morning, a tractor-trailer caught fire on I-40 West. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened near the Blue Ridge Parkway, close to mile marker 54.1. At this time, very few details about the tractor-trailer fire have been released. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Crews were swiftly on the scene, where a portion of the roadway had to be closed until about 6:00 a.m. The cause of this fire could still be under investigation with law enforcement authorities.

Truck Crash on Long Shoals

Over the weekend, a truck overturned on Long Shoals Road, near the entrance to Biltmore Park. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the wreck happened at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night. For currently unknown reasons, the truck overturned in the roadway. Fist responders were swiftly on the scene where they had to extricate the driver. Although he was conscious and apparently able to walk, he was complaining of chest pain on the scene.

Back to School Safety in Buncombe County

With the new school year starting, Buncombe County officials are calling on parents, caregivers, motorists and students to make safety a top priority around bus stops. While school buses are designed and built to transport children to and from school safely, they're not completely without risk, and there are some important concerns to discuss with children and drivers to improve overall bus stop safety this year. WLOS ABC News Channel 13 recently reported on the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office's safety message to drivers around Asheville. They're reminding drivers in Buncombe County to exercise caution wherever children might be present, and especially around bus stops.

Safety Concerns on Ledbetter Road

Community members in Jackson County are calling on lawmakers to improve safety on Ledbetter Road. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, a fatal hit-and-run crash took the life of 40-year-old Daniel Brown earlier this summer. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is getting ready to receive $125,000, and community members in Jackson County are hoping for an access road that could be used by residents and Western Carolina University students.

Jackknifed Tractor Trailer in Buncombe County

Over the weekend, a semi truck jackknifed on a Buncombe County roadway. According to WLOS ABC News Channel 13, the incident happened sometime after 9:00 p.m. on Sunday night. The tractor-trailer jackknifed in the eastbound lanes of I-26 near mile marker 21, near New Stock Road. Very little information about this truck crash has been released, but we do know that a significant portion of guardrail was taken out during the wreck. Although the cause of this truck crash is still under investigation with local law enforcement authorities, initial reports indicate that the truck driver may have been traveling too fast for the conditions.
